#ShopeeGivesBack, Shopee’s long-term community initiative, has successfully raised RM48,000 for two environmental NGOs in Malaysia.
WWF-Malaysia and Zero Waste Malaysia received over 9,000 donations in two years, including 5,500 first-time donors. 85% of the money generated went to WWF-Malaysia, a national conservation foundation with 90 projects.
The funds are used to protect the Malayan tiger, Bornean elephants, Bornean orangutans, and sea turtles from poaching and habitat destruction.
WWF-Malaysia raises environmental awareness, supports education and research, and conserves native flora, animals, water, soils, and other natural resources.
Zero Waste Malaysia got 15% of their total donations through #ShopeeGivesBack, supporting their efforts to establish a waste-free and sustainable future for Malaysia. Zero Waste Malaysia promotes sustainable development through education, resources, public participation, and on-the-ground projects. #ShopeeGivesBack accounted for 13% of Zero Waste Malaysia’s donations in 2021.
Huiyan Pan, Shopee Malaysia’s Head of Brand Marketing, said, “Shopee is moved by the community’s support of our NGO partners’ environmental efforts.” We think that with shoppers’ assistance, we can construct a long-term, sustainable future for the environment and economy.
Shopee is proud to support WWF-conservation Malaysia’s efforts, which have reduced Malayan tiger snare encounters by 90%. In 2020 and 2021, a mother and three cubs were spotted in Belum-Temengor Forest Complex,” Pan said.
During Ramadan in 2021 and 2022, these two NGOs saw month-on-month donations climb by 85% and 113% through #ShopeeGivesBack. 1,000 first-time donors gave to WWF-Malaysia and Zero Waste Malaysia during a period when generous Malaysians gave to causes close to their hearts.
The #ShopeeGivesBack platform has enabled us reach bigger audiences to raise much-needed public support for WWF-conservation Malaysia’s efforts. WWF-Malaysia promotes sustainable lifestyles and increases climate change resilience through policy advocacy and safeguarding natural habitats, says Director of Partnerships Helina Yow.
#ShopeeGivesBack began on 1 May 2020 to help disadvantaged communities in Malaysia in four areas: underprivileged community development, children and family services, health charities, and environmental charities. Malaysians can support their favourite causes online through the site. Shopee verifies these NGOs’ track records and Registry of Societies registration.
