PETRONAS, in conjunction with the Festival of Lights, feted underprivileged children and senior citizens through its annual Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by the national oil and gas company, in the spirit of unity and social harmony ahead of the Deepavali celebrations.

The event was a culmination of various activities involving 300 students from SKJT West Country (Timur), 30 residents from Chasity Home in Kajang and 50 PETRONAS staff volunteers. Over two days, the PETRONAS conducted a gotong-royong cleanup and repainting of the senior citizens’ home, mural-painting around the school, as well as carried out fun learning activities with the children, organized by Galeri PETRONAS.

Speaking at the event, PETRONAS Head of Corporate Social Investment, Datin Norzita Abdul Samad on behalf of Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Liz Kamaruddin said, “PETRONAS as a national oil and gas corporation, has always been committed to empowering lives and ensuring the wellbeing the community by fostering social cohesion through its signature CSR programmes.”

Datin Norzita also presented a total of RM50,000 worth of contribution to one hundred selected students and the residents of Chasity Homes to assist with their Deepavali preparations.

During this time, added Datin Norzita, the company would reach out to deserving members of the community through Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS, as well as ignite the festive spirit through its television advertisement campaigns that highlight positive values, cultures and traditions and the ties that bind the people of multi-ethnic Malaysia.

This year, PETRONAS’ Deepavali campaign titled #PaatiSays, was inspired by “Boyz in the Hood”, a memorable 2003 advertisement that comically shows a group of young boys being stripped off their hip-hop persona after bumping into their Tamil-speaking grandmother on a busy street.

“This much-loved ad brings a significant message and for the #PaatiSays campaign this year, members of the public are given the opportunity to share the meaning, memories and traditions that have been passed from their elders to remind us about the importance of staying true to our roots,” said Datin Norzita.

Other highlights of Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS this time was the painting of murals around the school, as well as the presentation of PETRONAS’ much anticipated 2015 Deepavali festive campaign, #PaatiSays.

Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS is a CSR programme that reaches out to the less fortunate during festive seasons throughout the year. Launched in 2005, the programme also aims at nurturing the spirit of giving and volunteerism among PETRONAS’ employees and affiliates, providing them with a platform to connect with members of the community by contributing their time, skills and experience.

Since its launch, Sentuhan Kasih joined the stable of PETRONAS’ sustainable signature CSR programmes designed and implemented to benefit the deserving communities as part of its larger CSR commitment of giving back to the people wherever it operates.
