Tun S. Samy Vellu, passed away at the age of 86, according to Tan Sri Dr. Subramaniam, a former president of the MIC.
Tan Sri Dr. Subramaniam posted on Facebook on September 15 that Datuk Seri Vell Paari, had informed him of the sad news.
Tun S. Samy Vellu was a member of parliament for the district of Sungai Siput from 1974 until 2008 and was also the minister of works from 1979 until 1989. From 1989 to 1995, he was energy, telecommunications, and posts minister, then works minister from 1995 to 2008.
He was the longest-serving president of the MIC, having held the office for 31 years beginning in 1979.
During his tenure in the Cabinet, Tun S. Samy Vellu served under the leadership of three different prime ministers: Hussein Onn, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
In addition to this, he had one of the longest tenures of any minister, having served in the Cabinet for a total of 29 years
